The Brow Beat: How do I know which eye rejuvenation option is right for me?

As an Atlanta facial plastic surgeon with over 20 years of specialized aesthetic care, I’ve often heard patients complain about the aged appearance of their eyes.  Excess tissue of the upper eyelids, fat deposits underneath the eyes, and furrowed brows can all contribute to a tired, aged appearance.  Besides facelift surgery, which is designed to treat moderate overall facial aging, there are several cosmetic options for those with localized issues around the eyes including non-surgical Botox®,  Dysport® , and Ultherapy®;  blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), and brow lift (upper facelift) surgery.

For patients who don’t yet need or want surgical correction, Botox® or Dysport® may be used to temporarily relax the wrinkle causing muscles between the eyes or along the forehead.  With a few simple injections by our nurse injector Debbie Cooper, NP-C, patients can see a major improvement in crow’s feet and furrows for up to six months.  Our newest, non-surgical eye rejuvenation option is Ultherapy® skin tightening.  This FDA-cleared treatment for non-surgical brow lift uses ultrasound energy applied topically to heat the deeper layers of tissue and induce collagen production within the skin for tighter, more youthful looking skin.

To address bags underneath the eyes and advanced signs of eye aging, Dr. Burstein also performs blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) to remove isolated fat deposits underneath the eyes and excess eyelid skin.  In many patients, the herniated lower eyelid fat deposits can be removed through a small incision inside the eyelid to avoid external scars.  Many blepharoplasty patients also elect to receive a light chemical peel at the time of their blepharoplasty to further rejuvenate facial skin.

Endoscopic brow lift surgery addresses wrinkles and excess skin along the forehead and brow areas which can cause drooping of skin into the orbits (or directly around the eye). Often patients with severe brow sagging experience fatigue at having to try and hold the heavy brow skin up using their forehead muscles.  Endoscopic brow lifting uses the assistance of a small camera to view the treatment area internally, which allows me to use very small incisions hidden within the hairline.

While the type of eye rejuvenation recommended will largely depend on the location of your cosmetic issues, it will also depend upon a host of other factors like age, extent of facial aging, and whether or not you plan to have other facial plastic surgery procedures performed simultaneously.  Contact my office for more information on any of these eye rejuvenation options, and to schedule a consultation.
